Another reader poll

Is it acceptable for a white girl, with no Indian background other than a strong admiration of the culture and the clothes, to wear a sari to a formal event? Write in and let me know what you think.

Only if a sari is like a bathing suit and she's hot.

Oh, Turd... sigh.

I believe if the formal event is Indian, and you have an Indian friend who can help you wear it correctly and who can let you know if it really is appropriate for a white girl, than you can. I know if I to go to a certain wedding I would be inclined to wear one out of respect for the culture of the event and the people. But we'll see if that happens. Indian event--yes, other event--probably not, but maybe sari inspired?

At the 2005 California City Attorneys' Convention, the Berkeley City Attorney, Manuela Albequerque wore a bright yellow sari.

I found it odd. She ain't white, but she ain't Indian either.

A corollary:

When a white guy is rapping along with Tupac - or just singing a song for whatever reason, and in the lyrics is the word "nigga" or one of its variations, what is the protocol there? Especially when there is a black guy around. I mean, I like the song, it's got great lyrics, and that's how it goes. It's not my fault Tupac wrote it, and I paid for the album (hypothetically). For instance:

First off, fuck your bitch
And the clique you claim
West Side when we ride
Come equipped with game
You claim to be a playa
But I fucked your wife
We bust on Bad Boys
Niggas fucked for Life

You know? You can't just leave that line out. Help me out here, RB! Shiiit!

I think it's totally fine for an Indian event, but may be a bit strange at a non-Indian event, if you are not Indian.

No! The word, "nigger" is not appropriate for any event, sheesh!
