I need help in settling a little dispute. Do you think meatloaf is a normal thing to order in a diner? I'm not asking whether you would order it, or whether you think meatloaf is disgusting or not -- just whether or not you think is it something that is:
A) commonly found on diner menus
and
B) commonly ordered in diners.

Meatloaf is gross. Which makes me wonder why people order it at restaurants, or why its even on the menu. I mean, I guess maybe its ok, but basically everything that is made out of cow is better. Including balls.
In my case, I see it maybe 50% on diner menus, order it 0%.
In my dad's case, orders it 75% if it's on the menu.
I just like knowing who made my meatloaf (same goes for chicken or tuna salad).
Truth be told, diner food has undergone a world of change since diners first appeared on the landscape. Most of this change has been due to the rise of "fast food" and diner's attempts to hang on to their dwindling patronage. Meatloaf used to be staple diner fare. I would imagine that, in those diners still true to their roots, one could find meatloaf on the menu, along with the better known burgers and apple pie. However, a lot of the establishments that pass as "diners" today offer up trendy dishes that really have little to do with what a diner originally was.
RB, you know exactly what I'm talking about. You're sneakily trying to reframe the issue as one of edibility (high) from appropriateness as a side (low)?

I can honestly say I've never had meatloaf in my life. That's what happens when you're Polish. And I see it on menus that are trying hard to be nostalgic. I think if you are ordering it you might be trying hard to be a) American; and b) nostalgic.
As a matter of fact, I just saw meatloaf on a menu today—actually, it was a meatloaf sandwich—and I considered, for about two seconds, ordering it.
I'll admit to loving meatloaf (with ketchup on it), but I've never ordered it in a restaurant. That would be weird.
Also, I too accidentally typed "meatload" twice in the above. I think it's my new favorite word.
Linda: Curse the written word! What I was trying to convey was that hamburgers and apple pie were the menu items for which diners were best known.
